In preparation for Aalborg Kommune’s web accessibility initiative, thorough research was conducted to understand user needs, especially those of individuals with disabilities. The focus was on mobile-first design, as analytics showed that 2 out of 3 visitors accessed the site via mobile. User persona research was crucial, highlighting the need for improved text legibility, color contrast, and streamlined navigation, particularly for those seeking daycare facilities in the city.

Based on the research, we established accessibility guidelines that addressed key web design principles, such as text size correction, high contrast color schemes, and simplified navigation. These guidelines were aligned with the European Union’s web accessibility standards, ensuring that the site could be easily perceived, understood, and navigated by all users, regardless of ability.

The final result is an accessible, user-friendly Figma prototype for the “Find a Daycare Facility” study case, where users can seamlessly search for daycare options in Aalborg. The design ensures that all web components meet accessibility standards, providing a smooth and inclusive experience. By addressing core usability issues, the website is now better equipped to serve a diverse audience, fulfilling the city’s commitment to accessibility while meeting the upcoming EU requirements.
